Front door glass replacement in Toronto - replace glass entry door

How Front Door Glass Is Built

Knowing how the glass sits in the door explains why it can usually be replaced on its own.

Most steel and fiberglass entry doors in Toronto don't have loose glass puttied into the door. They have a glass insert, sometimes called a door lite: a sealed glass unit held between two plastic or composite frames, one on each side of the door. The frames are screwed together through the door, and the screw heads are hidden under plugs or trim on the inside face.

That design is good news when something goes wrong. The insert can be unscrewed, lifted out and replaced with a new one of the same size, without touching the door slab, the hinges, the lock or the frame. Inserts come in standard sizes: full-lite (almost the whole door), three-quarter, half-lite, small oval and decorative shapes, and narrow sidelight inserts.

Wood doors are different. The glass is usually held by wood stops nailed or screwed around the opening. That glass can also be replaced, but it takes more care to remove the stops without damaging the finish.

Commercial storefront and aluminum doors use a separate system entirely. If that's the door you have, see door glass repair and storefront glass door repair.

Problems We Fix With New Door Glass

The most common reasons people call us about the glass in their front door.

1

Cracked or broken glass

A slammed door, a ball, a temperature shock in winter, or a break-in attempt.

DIY check: Tape over the crack from both sides so it can't spread or fall out.
Call a pro: Replace the insert. Cracked safety glass should not be left in a door.
2

Fog between the panes

The seal around the sealed unit has failed. Moisture gets in and condenses between the layers.

DIY check: Wipe both faces. If the fog is between the layers, it won't come off.
Call a pro: Replace the insert. The seal can't be reliably repaired on site.
3

Drafts around the glass

The gasket or caulking between the insert frame and the door has shrunk or cracked.

DIY check: Hold a hand or a candle near the frame edge on a windy day.
Call a pro: Reseal or replace the insert frame so the glass is airtight again.
4

Outdated or clear glass

You want privacy, more light, or a style that matches a renovation.

DIY check: Check the size of the existing opening from inside.
Call a pro: Swap to a new insert in the same size: frosted, textured, decorative or with built-in blinds.
5

Glass near the lock

Clear glass beside the deadbolt lets someone reach in after breaking it.

DIY check: Look at how close the glass is to the lock and handle.
Call a pro: Upgrade to laminated or obscure glass, and see door reinforcement.
6

Blinds stuck or broken

Blinds-between-glass inserts can jam or the tilt control can fail.

DIY check: Try the slider gently; don't force it.
Call a pro: Replace the insert with a new blinds unit or switch to a plain insert.

Replace the Glass or Replace the Door?

Most of the time the glass alone is enough. Sometimes the door itself is the problem.

Replace just the glass when

  • The door slab is solid and not rusted or rotted
  • The door closes and locks properly
  • Only the glass is cracked, fogged or dated
  • The insert frame is a standard size
  • You want to keep your current door colour and hardware
  • The frame and sill around the door are sound

Replace the door when

  • The steel skin is rusted through at the bottom
  • The door is warped and won't seal
  • A break-in damaged the slab and the frame
  • The door is very old and poorly insulated
  • You want a different door style altogether
  • The frame or sill is rotted

If the door itself needs replacing, a new slab in the existing frame is often enough. See door slab replacement. If the frame is gone too, we'll quote a full front door replacement.

Types of Replacement Door Glass

What you can choose when the insert is replaced.

Clear tempered glass

The standard option for maximum light. Glass in doors must be safety glass, which means tempered or laminated, so that if it breaks it doesn't leave long sharp shards. Any replacement we install meets that requirement.

Privacy and textured glass

Frosted, rain, reed and other textured patterns let light in without letting people see through. A popular choice on front doors that face the street and on bathroom-side back doors.

Decorative glass

Leaded, bevelled and patterned inserts in oval, arched and rectangular shapes. These are common on older Toronto homes and on new doors bought to match a heritage look.

Blinds-between-glass

Blinds sealed inside the glass unit, controlled by a small slider on the frame. They never collect dust and can't be damaged by pets or kids. Very common on back and side doors that open onto a deck or yard.

Laminated security glass

Two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. When it breaks, it cracks but stays in the frame, which makes it much harder to reach through to the lock. A sensible upgrade for glass close to the deadbolt.

Sidelights and Transoms

The glass beside and above the door.

Sidelights are the narrow glass panels beside a front door, and transoms are the panels above it. They take the same kind of beating as the door glass: impacts, seal failure, and cracks from the frame moving over the years. Sidelight inserts can usually be replaced the same way as a door insert, one panel at a time.

Because sidelights sit right beside the lock, they're also a common target in break-ins. If yours was broken, we can install laminated glass in the replacement and check the lock side of the door at the same time. See break-in repairs and front door security upgrades.

How We Replace Front Door Glass

From the first photo to the finished door.

1. Photos and measurements

We measure the insert frame from inside, not the visible glass, and note the door thickness.

2. Choose the glass

Clear, privacy, decorative, blinds or laminated, in the same frame size.

3. Secure if needed

If the glass is broken, we cover the opening the same day. See board-up.

4. Remove the old insert

Screw plugs are lifted, the inner frame is unscrewed, and the old unit is cut free of old sealant.

5. Seal and install

The opening is cleaned, fresh sealant goes on, and the new insert is set and screwed tight from inside.

6. Check the door

We confirm the door still closes and locks properly and there are no drafts around the new glass.

Why Door Glass Fails in Toronto

Our climate is hard on sealed glass.

Temperature swings

A front door can face minus twenty outside and plus twenty inside on the same day. The glass unit expands and contracts every time, and over years the edge seal gives way. That's when fog appears between the panes.

Sun on dark doors

South- and west-facing doors painted a dark colour get very hot in summer. Heat speeds up seal failure and can crack glass that already has a small chip.

A door that slams

A door without a closer, or with a storm door that slams, sends a shock through the glass every time. Adjusting the storm door closer is worth doing when the glass is replaced.

A door that has dropped

When hinges wear or the frame moves, the door can twist slightly each time it closes. That stress goes straight into the glass insert. If the door rubs or has to be pushed to latch, it should be adjusted too. See door won't close or lock.

What Affects the Cost

We quote after seeing the door and the glass you want.

  • Insert size. Full-lite inserts cost more than half-lite or small decorative ones.
  • Glass type. Clear tempered, textured, decorative, laminated or blinds-between-glass.
  • Door type. Steel and fiberglass inserts are straightforward; wood doors with stops take longer.
  • Sidelights. Each sidelight panel is a separate unit.
  • Urgency. Same-day board-up after a break-in or storm.
  • Other repairs. Weatherstripping, hinge adjustment or a lock upgrade done in the same visit.

For general numbers, see the residential door repair cost guide.

Front Door Glass FAQ

Questions homeowners ask us.

Can you replace the glass without replacing the door?

Yes, in most steel and fiberglass doors. The glass is a separate insert held by screws and can be replaced in the same opening.

How do I know what size insert I have?

Measure the frame around the glass from the inside of the door, edge to edge. We confirm the size on site before ordering.

Can the fog between the panes be cleaned?

No. Fog between the layers means the seal has failed. The insert needs to be replaced.

Can I change clear glass to privacy glass?

Yes. As long as the new insert is the same size, you can choose a different glass style.

Is replacement door glass tempered?

Yes. Glass in doors must be safety glass. We install tempered or laminated glass.

Can you replace sidelight glass too?

Yes. Sidelights and transoms are replaced the same way, one panel at a time.

How long does it take?

The swap itself is usually done in one visit once the insert is ready. Broken glass can be secured the same day.

Can I send a photo for a quote?

Yes. Send photos of the door from inside and outside to our WhatsApp at 647-866-0956.
