  • Front door security upgrades on a Toronto home entrance

Most residential break-ins in the GTA are not sophisticated. Nobody picks a lock. Somebody kicks the door beside the handle, the frame splits along a short screw line, and the door swings open in under two seconds. That is the whole event.

Which means the useful question is not “what lock should I buy.” It is “what part of my entrance fails first, and how do I make that part stronger.” This guide walks through the upgrades that actually change the outcome, roughly in order of value for money, plus the ones that mostly buy peace of mind. If you want a technician to look at your entrance instead, call 647-951-3510.

Why Most Front Doors Fail: It Is the Frame, Not the Lock

A standard residential strike plate is held by two screws about 19 mm long. They bite into the door jamb, which is a thin piece of trim, and nothing else. Behind that jamb is an air gap and then the wall stud.

When someone kicks the door, the deadbolt does not break and the door slab usually does not break. The jamb splits. The lock is still locked, sitting in a piece of wood that has torn free. This is why upgrading from a good deadbolt to a slightly better deadbolt changes almost nothing, while upgrading the strike changes almost everything.

Our team sees the aftermath constantly — see break-in repairs in Toronto for what that damage looks like and how it gets rebuilt.

Upgrade 1: A Reinforced Strike Plate With Long Screws

This is the highest-return upgrade on the list, and it is also the cheapest.

Replace the two-screw strike with a heavy box strike, and use screws long enough to pass through the jamb, cross the shim gap and bite into the framing behind it. Do the same at the hinge side, replacing one screw per hinge with a long one. Now a kick has to move the wall, not a strip of trim.

    What to look for

    • Steel box strike rather than a flat plate, so the bolt is captured on all sides
    • Screws that reach solid framing, not just the jamb
    • Four screws minimum at the strike, spread apart rather than in a line
    • Long screws in the top hinge as well — that is the second failure point

If the jamb is already cracked, soft or previously repaired, reinforcing it is a repair job rather than a hardware swap. See exterior door frame repair.

Upgrade 2: A Deadbolt With Real Throw, Installed Properly

A deadbolt matters, but installation matters more than the box it came in. A 25 mm bolt landing in a shallow, misaligned pocket is weaker than a modest bolt seated fully in a reinforced strike.

Check these before you buy anything

    • Does the bolt extend fully when you turn the thumbturn, without resistance?
    • Do you have to lift or push the door to lock it? That is misalignment, and it means the bolt is not fully seated.
    • Is the bolt pocket deep enough that the bolt bottoms out on wood?

A door that has to be lifted to lock is telling you the hinges have sagged or the frame has moved. Fix that first. Related reading: help for sticking or jammed doors.

Upgrade 3: Fix the Door Slab Itself

Steel front door reinforcement and repair in the GTA

Not every door is worth reinforcing. A hollow-core slab used as an exterior door — still common on older side and garage-access entrances around Toronto — cannot be made secure. It has to be replaced.

    Solid wood

Good slab, but the lock area can be reinforced with a wrap plate that spreads force across the stile instead of concentrating it at the bore. Wood also moves with humidity, so a door that locks easily in February may bind in July. More on that in wood door repair.

    Steel

Strong at the skin, but the edge and the lock bore are where they fail. A door reinforcer wrapped around the lock edge is cheap and effective. If the slab is already dented or the edge is deformed from a previous forced entry, see steel door repair.

    Fibreglass and composite

Good thermal performance and stable dimensions, but the security still comes from the frame and strike, not the slab. Reinforce the same points.

Upgrade 4: Glass Beside the Door

Sidelights and glazed panels are the quiet weakness in a lot of Toronto entrances. Breaking the glass and reaching the thumbturn takes seconds and makes far less noise than a kick.

    Practical options

    • Double-cylinder deadbolt (key both sides) — effective, but a real fire-egress concern. If nobody can find the key in smoke, it is dangerous. Think carefully before choosing this.
    • Security film on the sidelight — the glass still breaks but stays in the frame, which stops the reach-through and adds noise and time.
    • Laminated glass replacement — the strongest option and the most expensive.
    • Move the thumbturn out of arm’s reach with a different lock position.

For glazed entries and storefront-style glass doors, see aluminum and glass doors.

Upgrade 5: Hinges, and the Side Nobody Checks

Everyone inspects the lock side. The hinge side gets ignored until the door drops 3 mm and stops latching. Three things to check:

    • Screws: at least one long screw per hinge into framing.
    • Exposed pins: if the hinge barrel is on the outside, use non-removable pins or set screws.
    • Sag: a sagging door leaves a visible gap and stops the deadbolt from seating. That is a security problem, not just a comfort one.

On heavier doors and commercial entrances, pivot hinge replacement is often the right fix rather than more screws.

Upgrade 6: Smart Locks, Honestly Assessed

A smart lock is a convenience and monitoring upgrade. It tells you when the door opened, lets you give a code to a contractor, and removes the spare-key-under-the-mat problem. Those are real benefits.

What it does not do is make a weak frame strong. A smart deadbolt in an unreinforced jamb fails to exactly the same kick as a mechanical one. Buy it for the convenience, and reinforce the strike separately.

Things worth checking before you buy

    • Battery life in cold weather — exterior units in a Toronto January drain faster than the box claims
    • A physical key override
    • Whether it fits your door thickness and bore
    • Whether it still works when your internet is down

Priority Order, If You Are Doing This on a Budget

    Priority Upgrade Why
1 Box strike + long screws, lock and hinge side Fixes the actual failure point
2 Correct deadbolt alignment and full throw A bolt that does not seat is decoration
3 Frame repair if the jamb is soft or split No hardware holds in rotten wood
4 Sidelight film or laminated glass Closes the reach-through route
5 Hinge screws and non-removable pins The forgotten side of the door
6 Lighting, camera, smart lock Deterrence and awareness, not resistance

What These Upgrades Cost in the GTA (2026)

Ranges below are for planning. Actual pricing depends on the door, the condition of the frame and how much has to be rebuilt. We give a firm number after seeing the entrance.

    Work Typical range
Reinforced strike + long screws, one door $150 – $280
    Deadbolt supply and install $180 – $400
    Smart lock install (customer-supplied unit) $140 – $260
Jamb repair and reinforcement after damage $300 – $750
    Full frame replacement $800 – $1,800
    Security film on a sidelight $200 – $450

    Renting, or in a Condo?

Reinforced strikes and long screws are usually acceptable because they are reversible and do not alter the door slab. Changing the lock cylinder, drilling a new bore or replacing the door itself normally needs the landlord’s or corporation’s sign-off. Ask first, in writing, and keep the original hardware so it can be put back.

    A Five-Minute Self-Assessment

    • Open the door and pull out the strike plate screws. Under 25 mm? That is your weak point.
    • Lock the deadbolt. Did you have to lift or shove the door? Misalignment.
    • Push hard on the jamb next to the strike. Does it flex? There is a shim gap doing nothing.
    • Look at the hinge barrels from outside. Pins exposed?
    • Stand outside and reach toward the sidelight. Can you touch the thumbturn?
    • Check the bottom of the jamb for softness. Rot means no hardware will hold.
    • Is there a working light over the entrance?

Anything you flagged there is worth fixing before you spend money on a smarter lock.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the single best front door security upgrade?

A reinforced box strike with screws long enough to reach the wall framing, on both the lock side and the top hinge. It is the cheapest upgrade and it addresses the way doors actually get forced.

Are smart locks less secure than regular deadbolts?

Mechanically they are comparable. The difference is convenience and monitoring, not resistance to force. Either way, the frame decides the outcome.

Should I install a double-cylinder deadbolt because of my sidelight?

It works, but it means you need a key to get out. In a fire that is a serious problem, especially with children or anyone with mobility limits. Security film or laminated glass usually solves the same problem without the egress risk.

My door will not lock unless I lift it. Is that a security issue?

Yes. It means the bolt is not fully seated in the strike, so it is far easier to force. It is usually a hinge sag or a shifted frame, and it is a straightforward repair.

Can you reinforce a door without changing how it looks?

In most cases yes. Box strikes and long screws are hidden once the door is closed, and edge reinforcers sit flush. Only frame replacement changes the look.

Do you do emergency work after a break-in?

Yes, 24/7. We secure and board up the same night and come back to rebuild properly. See break-in repairs Toronto and 24-hour burglary repairs.

How long does a security upgrade visit take?

A strike reinforcement and alignment on one door is typically under an hour. Frame repair or a door replacement takes longer and may need a return visit for materials.
