Glass Door Broken: What Happens First

Make it safe, make it secure, then fix it right.

When a glass door breaks, there are really three jobs. The first is safety: broken glass, especially laminated or wired glass hanging in the frame, can fall. The second is security: an open storefront or a missing door panel has to be closed up before we leave. The third is the repair: new glass, and often a repaired frame, lock or pivot.

Most glass can't be cut and installed on the same night. Tempered glass for doors is made to size, so it has to be ordered. That is why an emergency glass door call usually ends with the opening boarded or panelled so the business or home is secure, and the new glass installed on a return visit.

If the door frame, lock, closer or pivot was damaged too, we deal with those at the same time so the door works properly once the glass is in.

Board-Up Tonight, Glass Tomorrow

Why most glass can't go in on the same night.

Glass in doors has to be safety glass: tempered or laminated. Tempered glass can't be cut after it is made, so each panel is manufactured to the exact size of the opening. That takes time. Board-up keeps the property secure until the glass arrives.

A proper board-up is screwed into the frame, not just leaned against it, and fills the opening so it can't be pushed in. On storefronts we leave the door usable where we can so staff can still get in and out. See emergency door repair for more about our board-up service.

What we need to know for the glass

The size of the panel, whether it is clear, tinted or frosted, whether it is single glass or a sealed double unit, and whether the building needs laminated glass. We note all of this on the first visit.

For Business Owners: Getting Back to Normal

Keeping the disruption short.

  • Call the police if it was a break-in, and get a report number.
  • Photograph everything before it is cleaned up. Your insurer will ask.
  • Call us for the board-up and the repair at the same time, so there is one contractor and one report.
  • Ask us for written details of the damage and the work for your insurance claim.
  • Think about the lock and frame, not just the glass. A bent frame or weak lock invites a second break-in.
  • Check the other doors. Back and side doors are often tried too. See commercial back door repair.

Repair or Replace the Whole Door?

Most of the time only the glass needs replacing.

Glass replacement is usually enough when

  • The frame and stiles are straight
  • The door still swings and latches
  • The pivots and closer work
  • The lock can be repaired or replaced
  • Only one panel broke

A new door or frame may be needed when

  • The aluminum door was badly bent
  • The frame was torn from the wall
  • Corners or welds have split
  • The door has been broken into before
  • The door is very old and parts are not made

See storefront glass door replacement and storefront door replacement.

What Affects the Cost

We confirm the price before work starts.

  • Glass size and type. Tempered, laminated, tinted, or a sealed double unit.
  • Board-up. Size of the opening and time of the call.
  • Door damage. Frame, lock, pivot or closer repairs on top of the glass.
  • Access. Ground-floor storefront, mall unit, or upper-floor office.

See the commercial door repair cost guide.

Emergency Glass Door FAQ

Questions owners ask.

Can you replace the glass the same night?

Usually not. Door glass is tempered and made to size, so it has to be ordered. We secure the opening the same night and install the glass when it arrives.

Do you board up storefronts?

Yes. We remove the broken glass and board the opening so the business can be locked.

Do you replace glass in home doors too?

Yes. Patio doors, French doors, front door glass and sidelights.

My glass door is cracked but not broken. Is that an emergency?

Not always, but a crack in tempered glass can shatter suddenly. Call us so we can check it and replace it before it fails.

Will my insurance cover it?

That depends on your policy. We give you written details of the damage and the work to support your claim.

Can you fix the lock and frame at the same time?

Yes. We check the whole door, not just the glass.

Do you work in malls and plazas?

Yes, including after-hours work to fit around mall rules.

Can I send photos first?

Yes. WhatsApp 647-866-0956.
