What Counts as a Front Door Emergency

If the house can't be locked tonight, it is an emergency.

Most emergency calls we get for front doors fall into a few situations. A break-in or attempted break-in has split the frame at the lock. The door has dropped or swollen and won't close into the frame. The lock or deadbolt has jammed, the key has broken off, or the bolt won't throw. Or the hinges have pulled out of the frame and the door is hanging.

In every one of these, the first job is the same: make the house secure before we leave. When the damage allows it, we repair the door on the same visit. When it doesn't, for example when the frame is shattered or a new door is needed, we secure the opening for the night and come back to finish the repair.

If there was a break-in, call the police first and take photos of the damage before anything is moved. Your insurance company will want them.

Emergency Front Door Problems We Fix

What we see most often at night and on weekends.

1

Door kicked in, frame split

The jamb has split at the strike and the deadbolt no longer has anything to lock into.

DIY check: Don't try to nail the frame back. Close the door and block it from inside if you can.
Call a pro: Frame repaired and reinforced with a long security strike; see break-in repairs.
2

Lock won't turn or key broke

A jammed cylinder, a broken key or a bolt that won't throw.

DIY check: Don't force the key, it can snap inside the lock.
Call a pro: Lock opened, repaired or replaced on the spot.
3

Door won't close

The door has dropped, swollen or the frame has moved, so it hits the frame or misses the latch.

DIY check: Check whether the door rubs at the top corner or bottom.
Call a pro: Hinges, strike and door adjusted so it closes and locks.
4

Hinges pulled out

The hinge screws have torn out of the frame and the door is hanging.

DIY check: Support the door. Don't let it hang on one hinge.
Call a pro: Hinges re-anchored into the framing with long screws.
5

Glass broken in the door

A sidelight or door glass has been broken.

DIY check: Keep away from the broken glass. Tape cardboard over small openings.
Call a pro: Opening secured; glass replaced on a return visit.
6

Lock damaged in a break-in attempt

The cylinder was pulled, drilled or snapped.

DIY check: Don't rely on a damaged lock overnight.
Call a pro: New lock installed; see lock rekey and replacement.

Repair Tonight or Replace Later?

What can be done on an emergency visit.

Usually fixed on the first visit

  • Split jamb at the strike
  • Hinges torn out of the frame
  • Deadbolt or lock replacement
  • Door that won't close or latch
  • Strike plate and frame reinforcement

Usually needs a second visit

  • A new front door slab or pre-hung door
  • Large glass or sidelight replacement
  • Frame shattered along its whole height
  • Custom or special-order hardware
  • Full front door replacement

If the door itself is beyond repair, we can measure on the emergency visit and come back with the right door. See front door replacement and door slab replacement.

After a Break-In: Making the Front Door Stronger

Most front doors fail at the frame, not the lock.

When a front door is kicked in, the deadbolt almost never breaks. What gives way is the thin wood of the door frame around the strike plate, held on by short screws. That is why a repair should do more than put the old trim back.

Long security strike

A heavy strike plate with long screws driven into the framing stud behind the jamb spreads the force of a kick across the wall instead of a few centimetres of trim.

Hinge-side screws

Replacing one short screw in each hinge with a long one into the stud stops the door being forced from the hinge side.

Door edge and lock reinforcement

Reinforcement plates around the lock stop the door itself from splitting around the deadbolt.

More on this in door reinforcement after a break-in and front door security upgrades.
