Garage doors — heavy, tensioned, and not a DIY job
A double garage door weighs somewhere between 130 and 180 kilograms, and it does not feel that heavy because the springs are carrying nearly all of it. The spring has snapped
Usually a loud bang, then a door that is far too heavy for the opener. We replace the spring in a matched pair and rebalance the door so the opener is not carrying the weight.
A cable has come off the drum
The door goes crooked and jams in the opening. We replace the cables, reset the drums and re-level the door rather than forcing it back onto the track.
The door has come off its track
Impact, a worn roller or a bent section. We straighten or replace the track, fit new rollers and realign the door so it runs without binding.
The opener runs but nothing moves
A stripped drive gear, a broken trolley or a disengaged carriage. These are replaceable parts, so we diagnose the unit before recommending a new opener.

The one-minute balance test
Pull the release cord and lift the door by hand to about waist height, then let go. A correctly balanced door stays where you left it. Yes. Springs are rated in cycles, so if one has reached the end the other is close behind. A mismatched pair puts the door out of balance and wears the opener.
Can my opener be repaired or do I need a new one?
